In the United States, environmental laws protect air and water resources and also control certain aspects of land use, particularly waste disposal on land. Basic laws are federal, but many states have their own laws, often stricter than those of federal law. Applicable laws also control the working environment and noise levels caused by machinery, especially aircraft. Regulations on food purity and drug safety often include environmental aspects. And the management of radioactive substances is also a matter of “environmental law”. The main regulators are the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) – but about 13 other agencies are directly involved in law enforcement and still others indirectly. All states also have environmental agencies. Such cases are costly for both the companies being sued and the plaintiffs filing the lawsuit, as evidenced by the Wobum, Massachusetts case. Parents of 18 children with leukemia (plus one adult victim) were convinced that their illness was due to industrial solvents in the water supply.
