A certified copy of one of these documents is also acceptable: if you do not have access to any of these documents, please contact the plan for acceptable alternatives. (a) General. To obtain an original Social Security number, you must provide convincing proof of your age, U.S. citizenship or alien status and true identity, as described in paragraphs (b) through (e) of this section. If you apply for a replacement Social Security number, you must provide convincing proof of your true identity as described in paragraph (c) of this section, and you may also be required to provide convincing proof of your age and U.S. citizenship or alien status, as described in paragraphs (b), (d) and (e) of this section. If you are applying for an original or replacement Social Security number, you will also need to provide evidence to help us establish the existence and identity of one or more previously assigned Social Security Numbers. We will not issue a Social Security number or issue an original or replacement card unless we determine that you meet all verification requirements. We require an in-person interview if you are 12 years of age or older and apply for an original Social Security number, unless you are a foreigner applying for a Social Security number as part of the immigration process described in Section 422.103(b)(3).
We may require a personal interview with other candidates. Any paper or other significant document presented in evidence must be originals or copies of the original documents certified by the custodians of the original and reviewable documents. We may also review your eligibility factors in other ways, as described in paragraphs (b) through (e) of this section, including, but not limited to, data matching or other agreements with government agencies or other entities that we believe can provide us with reasonable and secure verification of your eligibility factors. The British Columbia Motor Vehicle Division accepts the following documents as proof of age and identity. Photocopies or altered documents will not be accepted. (g) the impossibility of verifying eligibility factors. We will not issue an original or replacement social security identity card if you provide invalid or expired documents or if we are unable to verify the required evidence by any other means described in paragraph (a) of this section. Invalid documents are either falsified documents purporting to be issued by the case administrator or properly issued documents that have been improperly altered after they have been issued. An expired document was only valid for a limited time and that time has elapsed. Tickets, boatmasters` certificates and certificates are not accepted as proof of identity A clear and legible copy (physical or electronic) of one of these documents is accepted as proof of age and/or identity: military passports and identification cards are accepted, but are less common forms of identification in most regions. As a result, most identity verifiers are unaware of the security features of these documents.
For these forms of identification, it is strongly recommended that organizations use the Identity Verification Guide to verify age. In some states, special ID cards are accepted for undocumented immigrants or community ID cards. However, ID cards that are acceptable in one state may not be accepted in another. In fact, individual institutions sometimes do not even accept out-of-state identification as a valid form of identification. It is always advisable to consult the legal guidelines of your own state and/or municipality before developing a company policy. The types of identification deemed legally acceptable to confirm a client`s age vary by state and/or municipality. In addition, employers, bank employees, and human resources professionals must follow specific regulations to verify identity and work authorization in the United States. (d) Proof of U.S. Citizenship. Generally, an applicant for an original or replacement Social Security Number can prove that they are a U.S.
citizen by birth by providing a birth certificate or other evidence as described in paragraphs (b) and (c) of this section indicating a U.S. place of birth. If a foreign-born applicant is a U.S. citizen, the applicant for a Social Security Number or a replacement Social Security Number card must provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship. If the required proof is not available, no Social Security Number will be issued until satisfactory proof of U.S. citizenship is provided. Each of the following is generally acceptable proof of U.S. citizenship for a foreign-born applicant: To obtain employment in the United States, one must complete Form I-9. New employees must either provide a single piece of identification that establishes both identity and work authorization, or provide two forms of identification – one that establishes identity and another that establishes a work permit. If we have identified third-party copyright information, you must obtain permission from the relevant copyright holders. To ensure the legitimacy of all types of identity and work permits, we refer to the 700-page American Identification Guide, often referred to as the “bible” for identity verification.
(5) Declaration of Consular Birth (Ministry of Foreign Affairs Form FS-240 or FS-545); or (e) Proof of alien status – (1) General rules of evidence. If a person who is not a U.S. citizen applies for an original Social Security number or replacement Social Security ID card, they must provide a recent document issued by the Department of Homeland Security in accordance with that agency`s regulations as proof of alien status. The document must state that the applicant was lawfully admitted to the United States, either for permanent residence or on the basis of a legal authorization that allows them to work in the United States, or that the applicant`s alien status has changed so that it is legal for them to work. If the applicant does not provide such a document, no Social Security Number will be issued. If the applicant submits an unexpired document from the Department of Homeland Security showing the current work permit, a Social Security number will be assigned or verified and a card will be issued that can be used for the work. If the applicant`s work permit is temporary or can be terminated by the Department of Homeland Security, the SSA records may be commented accordingly. If the documents do not include a work permit and the applicant wants a Social Security number for business purposes, no Social Security number will be issued.
If the applicant requests the number for non-business purposes and proves that the number is required for valid non-functional purposes, the number may be assigned and the card issued will be accompanied by a non-functional legend. Annotates the SSA record to indicate that a number has been assigned and a card has been issued for non-functional purposes. In this case, if the revenue is subsequently reported to SSA, the Department of Homeland Security will be notified of the report. SSA can also notify this agency if income is reported for a Social Security number that was valid for work when it was assigned, but for which the work permit expired or was later terminated by the Department of Homeland Security. (2) A birth certificate is not sufficient proof of identity for those purposes. (6) Other checks conducted by the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of State, or federal or state court records confirming citizenship.
