Each insurance period runs from 28 February of a given year to 28 February of the following year. PWU found that the best model for covering members` legal costs in obtaining a defence in court was to implement a coverage program that would allow the member to choose their lawyer (subject to the approval of the program manager), rather than telling the member which lawyer they might have to defend them. Members do not pay their lawyer, PWUPP does, and PWU funds the program without affecting the attorney-client relationship. All of this is subject to the terms of the plan and members have access to an Ontario-based call centre to assist them with the process. Since the Program Manager manages coverage, PWU`s liability is strictly limited to paying the approved costs necessary to maintain coverage during the coverage period.
