When I practiced this, I immediately saw a parallel with the musical arrangements. For example, each song will have three different sections regarding the plot (intro, main section, outro). Where each section meets, there must be a pivotal point, a transitional element. When I`m working, I always start by dividing the song into equal thirds, and then I divide again, so I have a total of nine sections. Starting with the arrangements, they have equal shares, but that will change as I delve into the details of the arrangements; Some of the grid “lines” are offset. In most songs, one focal point usually takes precedence over all others. Most verses, for example, have a moment that sounds a bit climax, but the climax that occurs in the chorus usually replaces the moment in the verse. In this lesson, I`m going to sit down with Sam to discuss some of the strangest rules of music theory. You will see that we do not agree on whether these rules should be followed, and we all have very strong opinions! This is the #1 PITTRAPE that new students face. Most of the time, students think that when they play their instrument, it counts as an exercise. Correct the recording. Playing is playing – and it`s fun. Do it and enjoy. Write your own music and dream of being a star. BUT please keep in mind that ONLY practice counts as practice. Everything else is just playing.
Keeping your music interesting is a much harder task than most people realize. There`s a very delicate balance between a piece of music that`s so boring that people start to fall asleep and something so complex that the listener can`t keep up and gives up. The trick is to find a balance between repetition, so that the listener has something familiar to grasp and follow, and variation, so that the listener feels challenged to follow and surprised by the direction the music is taking. Without philosophizing too much, we want our music to engage our listeners. We want them to be fascinated, to experience a certain feeling that we want to convey, or sometimes we just want them to be entertained. But for composers and songwriters to communicate with our listeners, our music must engage them and clearly express our ideas. This is where the rule of three comes in to measure the effectiveness of our music. Well, even though I don`t agree with him from time to time, Sam does a great job explaining all these rules.
