First-year fellows completed Grand Challenges in Engineering I&II, a highly experiential foundation of courses that included the realization of remotely operated underwater vehicles and solar-powered water treatment equipment controlled by Arduino. These prototype projects address the National Academy of Engineering`s 14 major engineering challenges that focus on scientific discovery, health and the environment. The next cohort of 10 scientists will continue to be closely mentored, with a focus on service learning and engagement with regional health authorities and the community. Elon`s first- and second-year students work with dedicated mentors who learn law alongside a community of colleagues from different majors on campus with similar interests. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, problem solving, and professionalism, as are interactions with students and faculty at Elon University`s Faculty of Law. The George R. Johnson, Jr. Dean Emeritus and Professor of Law Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students who are committed to promoting the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion in Elon Law and the legal profession.
Gaylord`s scholarship and teaching focuses on constitutional law, with particular emphasis on equal protection, due process, speech, and religion. His articles on corporate freedom and the First Amendment discourse have resulted in numerous amicus curiae sessions at the U.S. Supreme Court and federal district courts across the country. Johnson, who passed away in November 2020, was a founding member of Elon University`s law school. He has earned an outstanding reputation as a teacher, mentor, scholar and leader in the legal community. The first cohort of public health researchers enrolled in the fall of 2021 and began exploring their careers through joint courses, personalized counseling, and exposure to public health professional events. Students completed Introduction to Public Health as a Cohort and Elon 1010 with students from the Health Professional Pathways program. Scientists attended the UNC Conference on Minority Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the spring of 2022. Throughout the year, they met with Yanica Faustin, Assistant Professor of Public Health Studies, and Cindy Fair, Professor at Watts/Thompson and Chair of the Department of Public Health Studies.
All scholarship recipients receive $5,000 in scholarships that can be renewed annually for up to four years. Elon offers these exciting programs: North Carolina`s top attorney has appointed a member of Elon Law School to a commission that supports activities to develop good character and virtuous attitudes in the state`s legal community. Eighteen new legal scholars joined the program in the fall of 2021. The group completed Elon 1010 and COR 1100: The Global Experience with program coordinator Elisha Savchak-Trogdon, associate professor of political science. Another 18 fellows plan to enroll in the fall of 2022. Considering that some students` long-term goals have specific counseling needs, Elon College supports several unique paths to professional development and certification. Elon Law Fellows are selected primarily on the basis of academic and personal characteristics such as leadership, service, and life or work experience. The scholarship is awarded to a selected number of approved applicants. Elon Law`s total tuition fees for entry into the classroom have been lower than the average cost at other private law schools across the country for years (source: ABA 2013 data of private law school costs). Members of the entry class are assured that there will be no increase in tuition fees during their studies. Elon Law`s innovative new curriculum is designed to reduce the cost of legal education and prepare students for early entry into the workforce.
The country`s first standard 21/2-year-old girls curriculum, which offers an 86-credit program, is strategically designed to maximize student learning and career success. The mission of the Chief Justice`s Commission on Professionalism has always been to enhance the professionalism of North Carolina judges, lawyers and law students, and with Professor Gaylord`s background and experience, he will be an excellent addition to the commission. Professor Scott Gaylord will assist the Commission on the Professionalism of the Chief Justice of North Carolina in promoting “appropriate professional conduct.” Respect for others and commitment to the values that underpin the rule of law and the administration of justice. Elon`s Engineering Scholarship Program continues to attract passionate students who are committed to the discipline and invest in the success of their classmates. In the second year of the program, scientists developed peer mentoring relationships through a joint Elon 1010 course and participation in the Elon Engineers Club. The faculty also held a focus group of first- and second-year fellows to assess student experiences and plan for future opportunities in the program.
