Sports betting is now legal in the great state of Michigan. After incumbent Gov. Rick Snyder overran a bipartisan bill in December 2018, lawmakers were able to strike the deal with Snyder`s successor, Gretchen Whitmer, in December 2019. Sports betting is allowed at Detroit`s three commercial casinos, and lawmakers have also been able to work with tribes throughout the Great Lakes state. In total, 20 of the state`s 26 casinos now offer sports betting in one form or another. Just under a year after its debut in retail sports betting, the state of Wolverine launched mass online sports betting on January 22, 2021. Oregon residents can bet on professional sports online through the lottery`s ScoreBoard app or in person at Chinook Winds Casino Resort or Spirit Mountain Casino. Oregon was one of four states that became a grandfather under PASPA to have sports betting, and the lottery took advantage of that to develop ScoreBoard, which was its first foray into an online business. Looking for similar success in New Hampshire, DraftKings will serve as the odds provider for the Oregon lottery starting in 2022. The tribe that owns Chinook Winds Casino has been allowed to reopen its contract with the state to add sports betting, but not all tribes are in the same situation. There is no tax rate on sports betting in Oregon per se, because the lottery is a Crown corporation and states cannot “tax” tribal gambling.
Previously, single-match sports betting was limited to the state of Nevada and Las Vegas has become the mecca of American sports betting. However, legal sports betting has expanded to more than 25 states and is counting as of 2022 and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The American Gaming Association had previously estimated that sports bettors in the U.S. had invested $150 billion a year before PASPA`s fall, but only about $5 billion of that amount happened legally — in Nevada. Arizona completed a fairly quick process from governor signing to approval with the start before the NFL season begins in September 2021. Governor Doug Ducey and the state legislature were able to craft a bill that included both tribal gambling interests and professional teams, as both were able to obtain licenses for mobile and retail sports betting. The Arizona Department of Gaming has issued 18 of the state`s 20 potential licenses, and there are currently more than 15 different operators accepting online betting in the state. The first six months showed that there was a considerable appetite for sports betting, as the footprint amounted to nearly $2.8 billion.
Pennsylvania was a pioneer in terms of legalizing sports betting — nearly seven months before PASPA was cancelled, but the road to offering live sports betting has been long. At this point, Pennsylvania is one of the most robust markets in the country, offering consumers multiple options online and in person. All other “legal” states must thank New Jersey, which led the fight against PASPA and finally claimed victory in 2018. Very soon after the Supreme Court decision, New Jersey passed its new law that officially legalizes sports betting and establishes rules and regulations. New Jersey`s open and competitive market has proven to be a great success and a model for other states. After just four years, the Garden State has established itself as Nevada`s friendly rival in terms of market size and sports betting innovation, becoming the first state to record $1 billion in monthly transactions and at least $100 million in monthly operator revenue. New Jersey sports betting parlors are open at many Atlantic City casinos, while the most popular sports betting parlor is a FanDuel lounge on Meadowlands Racetrack next to MetLife Stadium, about eight miles from New York City. Wyoming became the first state to legalize sports betting in 2021 when Governor Mark Gordon signed HB 133 in early April. The Equality State hit the market fairly quickly and accepted its first bets in September, when DraftKings and BetMGM were the first sports bets to operate in the state. As a fully digital state, Wyoming was also the first state to allow bettors to fund their accounts via cryptocurrency, and operators must have a reserve account located or chartered by a state bank. Big Wyoming has a 10% tax rate on income and allows betting on professional, college and Olympic sports. The attempt to legalize sports betting in Oklahoma in 2022 has failed.
It is still unclear whether a new application will be submitted in 2023. Betting on professional and college sports became legal in September 2019, with mobile and head-to-head betting allowed in several locations. Bets on the results of university matches are allowed, but incidental bets by players on university matches are prohibited. New Hampshire legalized sports betting and seemed poised to offer an open and competitive marketplace, as enabling legislation allows up to 10 unique online sports bets. However, after the auction phase, the New Hampshire Lottery decided to give DraftKings Sportsbook a monopoly on retail and mobile sports betting. DraftKings has offered the state a good tax revenue deal to maintain the monopoly, but punters now have only one option. DraftKings launched its mobile app in late December 2019, hitting a peak of $22 million before the sport took a break due to the COVID-19 crisis. The state collects 51% of gross gaming revenue as part of a deal for DraftKings to be the state`s sole operator. It took a while for the nation`s capital to emerge after the DC. Council legalized it in December 2018 and Mayor Muriel Bowser signed the measure into law in January 2019. The first bets via the city`s mobile app, GambetDC, powered by DC Lottery, were only made in May 2020. The road to launch saw a number of bumps and hiccups, and many people were ultimately not thrilled with the GambetDC platform and offerings.
Bookmaker William Hill entered the field in August 2020 with a physical bookmaker at Capital One Arena – the first bookmaker to operate on a sports site in the US. BetMGM recently followed suit with a retail outlet in National Park, which officially opened on January 31, 2022. FanDuel was the last to launch via Audi Field. In June, a law allowing sports betting was passed, although state college games are banned under the new law.
