New York Law Firms in London

If you look at Chambers UK, Chambers USA, Chambers Europe, Chambers Asia-Pacific, Chambers Latin America and Chambers Global, you can track the performance of each company in the different countries in which it operates. Our sister publication, Chambers Associate, provides an in-depth analysis of corporate reputation in the U.S. recruitment market. Buyers, sellers and advisors understand that as one of the most active law firms in this field, we consistently achieve a first-class ranking for M&A transactions. Issuers, investment banks and financial sponsors regularly turn to us when planning a UK or cross-border offering or listing. In emerging markets, governments, banks and multinationals entrust us with their most valuable transactions. Gunnercooke`s decision comes as several leading UK law firms, including Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Allen & Overy and Clifford Chance, continue to grow in the US with new offices and hires. We are also one of the few law firms with a full-service U.S. corporate practice in London, able to advise domestic and international clients on a wide range of regulatory and transactional matters in the United States. Unlike other law firms, Dechert`s team is made up of international trade and investment lawyers, as well as public affairs experts, many of whom are former European Commission officials, national regulators or World Trade Organization negotiators. Thanks to our extensive local experience, we provide invaluable insider insights into retail regulatory requirements for companies operating in Europe or trading with European partners. The promotion and recruitment of seasoned female lawyers has led to a more balanced ratio of male and female partners at many of the top 50 firms, according to data from The Lawyer.

In some companies, the gender ratio has improved significantly since 2016 in favour of female partners. Overall, the proportion of female partners in these companies increased from 18.2% in 2016 to 22.6%. However, three companies still do not have a female partner in London. While the firm now has 12 physical offices in the UK, US and Europe, Gunnercooke`s lawyers have the option to work remotely. Like other law firms, sometimes referred to as “distributed” firms, Gunnercooke`s website states that lawyers “can work from anywhere with an internet connection.” In terms of working hours, there is unlikely to be a discernible difference between large companies. It feels like U.S. firms charge very long hours, but the reality is that all high-profile law firms need a lot of time. Billable hours targets are higher for US businesses in the 1800-2000 range than for the 1600-1700 range set by leading UK companies, but some of this is offset by the more enthusiastic billing approaches typical of US companies.

Since many U.S. companies offer apprenticeships in London, students looking for an urban business with a transatlantic twist have plenty of choices. There are about 100 American and transatlantic companies present in the UK. About half offer training contracts, about 700 in total. The table below can be used as a starting point to find out more about companies operating in the UK market that originate from the US. Before voting, how do senior assistants and staff recognize the differences between the two law centres and the law firms that have made a name for themselves there? Are companies largely homogeneous and sell an image only according to their historical links with different territories? Or is there a fundamental difference between a company culture built in the UK and a culture built in the US? Kirkland and Latham top the ranking of 50 U.S. law firms in London in 2021. Hybrid and virtual law firms in the U.S. have grown in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Lawyer`s new US 50 rankings confirm that fiscal year 2020 was another record year for US law firms in the UK. 23 companies recorded double-digit sales growth and seven increased sales by 20% or more.

However, not all companies had such a performance last year. The following overview of companies is divided into two sections. The first part lists US companies that opened an office in London and built it from scratch, while the second part lists US companies that entered the UK market through a merger with an established UK company. There are significant differences between the two types, which we describe in detail below. Keep in mind that some second-tier companies had their own (sometimes well-established) London office prior to the merger. Lawyers who make the wrong choice of firm, whether it`s the US, UK, large or small companies, can easily become dissatisfied, but there are always alternatives for candidates with the best firms in both jurisdictions on their resume. Unlike many other international law firms in London, Dechert has extensive experience defending companies under criminal investigation. We pass this knowledge on to our customers. Our first-hand hands-on experience of how law enforcement is actually carried out by law enforcement around the world underpins our approach to compliance.

This type of law firm structure, similarly used by other distributed law firms composed of partners, typically allows lawyers to bring home a higher portion of the fees charged to clients. Keep in mind that while many of the companies listed below are happy to adopt the term “U.S. corporation,” others do not refer to themselves as such, preferring the term “international corporation.” You will have an idea of how to call them from the terminology on their websites or from reality. Of course, many companies identify with more than one category: Davis Polk belongs to the elite both globally and in New York; Cravath, Sullivan or Debevoise, although known internationally, have smaller networks and New York is really where their nerve centers are; then the elite British companies of the Magic Circle have greater global strength than most American companies, but would not be considered first-rate in New York alone. Larger UK law firms focus more on gradually introducing junior lawyers to greater responsibilities, and the formal aspects of training are widely regarded as superior. U.S. companies, on the other hand, are notorious for their baptism of fire approach, but it`s actually a simplistic view of what`s going on. U.S. companies based in the UK tend to have much smaller offices, so assistants and staff tend to have closer contact with experienced lawyers who can offer direct mentoring from the start. Many see this as compensation for the lack of formal training programmes. Differences in size also mean that younger lawyers tend to be less specialized (an aspect that is changing), have more client contact, and participate in more diverse and higher-level work. For companies in the following table that appear in the actual image, the name is highlighted in red.

We strive to keep them as up-to-date as possible based on the latest information we have received from companies. Increasing globalization means that the overlap between US and UK law firms has never been greater. Many US companies now have offices in London and vice versa. Nevertheless, cultural differences remain, which can be positive or negative depending on the person. New offices opened in London by US companies in 2017/18 included California-based technology specialist Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati; Goodwin and Fried Frank launched apprenticeship contracts after retrieving apprentices from the rubble of King & Wood Mallesons` European branch. Another transatlantic titan was founded in November 2017 when American Womble married the British national company Bond Dickinson and established a global operation with 26 offices, Womble Bond Dickinson.

The merger fever continued in 2018 when UK-based Berwin Leighton Paisner partnered with American Bryan Cave. The existing London offices of the two companies merged under the new name Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner. These are American-origin companies that opened a brand new office in London, usually with one or two partners at first, and built it from scratch. Some (like White & Case or Baker McKenzie) have been here for many years and are themselves large and important companies. Others (such as McDermott or Vinson & Elkins) have chosen to remain small boutique establishments, while still others (such as Locke Lord or Holland & Knight) have only recently entered the scene. Lawyers interested in working in specialist areas such as technology, employment or real estate may prefer UK law firms, where the legal culture gives these discrete departments more attention and prestige than is traditionally the case with their London offices in the US. However, American companies based in the City that initially focused primarily on corporate and financial work for American companies operating in Europe gradually began to specialize in these and other areas. As a legal market, New York is second only to London in terms of complexity and size. Therefore, we thought it would be useful to break down our satisfaction survey into types of companies. What you`ll see below are the top employee satisfaction companies, grouped by their identity in the legal market.

The IIt also shows that growth in the total number of lawyers working in U.S.-led firms in the U.K. has reached new highs, with the total number of lawyers increasing by 4.7% and the total number of partners in U.S. law firms increasing by 4.4%. Compensation will always be an important consideration for lawyers reviewing the best companies, and that`s where U.S. companies have an advantage. For example, lawyers who want to earn six-figure sums in the first three years of qualification should turn to firms like Kirkland & Ellis, Debevoise & Plimpton and Skadden Arps. Even highly-paid UK firms like Clifford Chance and Linklaters don`t pay 3-year-old PQE lawyers well over £90,000 at this stage of their careers. There are a number of US firms with offices in London that can be very tempting for lawyers given the incentives they offer over dominant local competitors.
